The TOEIC® Speaking and Writing tests measure oral and written English language skills for beginner to advanced levels, in a professional context. They determine a non-native English speaker’s ability to communicate effectively in English with colleagues and clients.
The tests can be taken together, in a single test session, or separately.

- Total test time: 1h20 (Speaking : 20 min – Writing : 60 min)
- Validity of scores: 2 years
- Format: computer-based test
- Levels assessed: beginner to advanced (CEFR levels A1 to C1)

Content and Test format
The Speaking and Writing tests can be taken together, in a single test session, or separately. Test questions are based on current, real-life work scenarios.
Speaking test
Test-takers are given specific instructions, including the time allowed to prepare and present their answers. Test-takers record their answers to questions that are designed to measure various aspects of their speaking ability.
- Questions 1-2: Read a text aloud
- Questions 3-4: Describe a picture
- Questions 5-7: Respond to questions
- Questions 8-10: respond to questions using information provided
- Question 11: Express an opinion
11 questions in 20 minutes.
Writing test
Test takers are given specific instructions, including a given time limit for their answers. Test takers write answers to questions that are designed to measure different aspects of their writing ability.
- Questions 1-5: Write a sentence based on a picture
- Question 6-7: Respond to a written request
- Question 8: Write an opinion essay
8 questions in 60 minutes.
